When Rick ripped the throat out of what’s his name with his teeth, after he said he’s okay. Michonne said “I know”. He asked how and she said “because I’m okay too”
On my millionth rewatch, it really stood out how different the relationship (which wasn’t romantic yet) was from his and Lori’s. Lori was constantly asking him to give her more communication, Michonne didn’t even need Rick to speak to get him.I definitely saw a potential for a deeper relationship between the two from early on. Rick seemed intrigued by her in a way. She also quickly bonded and kept a watchful eye on Carl (less in an older sister kind of way but in an aunt/adoptive mother kind of way) who was the most important person to Rick. As the show went on, there were quite a few "family" type of vibes between the three of them.
The best couple relationships in real life are founded on a previous friendship, respect and a deep care for each other, so the development towards Rick and Michonne as a couple felt actually really organic to me.
However, I will say that the episode that finally has them get together, came as a bit of a suprise to me, too, but mainly because I thought they would be even more of a slow burner.
