most of the time science fiction can be really weird and silly, which this series kind of is but i’m so into it!! love love love the themes it touches on. like how ye wenjie feels doomed by humanities narrow perspective and greed which was heightened being in the era of the chinese communist revolution, literal chills. also how development and evolution varies depending on circumstances and species, which i thought was interesting.
i think this series lies between entertainment or drama from the characters and the actual idea or plot of it. what i loved about the characters was jin and will… will’s inner conflict of family vs friends, being someone’s family for their whole life which i guess out of necessity, how the love doesn’t always equate or even exceed the people you choose to be with. i think it’s an interesting debate of family and friends or lovers, i mean you can argue about stability, reliability, freedom, choice, etc.
i was really entertained but i think the end felt a little long for me, the solutions weren’t as satisfying as it can be(?) the science part of it yeah is pretty superficial, really quite weird, and sounds like a plot just to shock people with existing conspiracy theories. it’s not a perfect story but i’m pretty impressed as i think science fiction is so difficult to do right with limited time and increasing demand for more complex ideas but also accuracy and entertainment value. you can’t really get it all right. (so much harder to do than say a coming of age or a horror)
